essay title Burning the bush to protect the bush: Using Indigenous knowledge in Australia’s eco-DRR target audience Policy makers, in Australia and beyond commentary This interactive art project, titled Meeting in the Middle, is inspired by the events of the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires in Victoria, Australia, and highlights the urgent need to include Indigenous knowledge in strategies of eco-Disaster Risk Reduction (eco-DRR). Climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of bushfires and failure to adapt eco-DRR will inevitably increase emergency and climate mobilities in the form of evacuation and migration, plus continue to damage Australia’s eco-system. The use of Indigenous cultural burning practices is a viable solution, however, needs more support to implement it on a larger scale. |
