essay title “We cannot tackle the climate crisis without addressing racial inequalities”: An analysis on how racial inequalities contributed to disaster (im)mobilities in Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma target audience people who are unaware of links between racial inequality and disaster immobility commentary The painting shows two sides to the issue of racial inequality and disaster immobility. On the left-hand side, it shows how many racialised minorities are disproportionately vulnerable to climate change-induced disasters, which is highlighted by the words incorporated into the painting. On the right-hand side, it shows what these communities are doing to empower themselves, which avoids creating the impression that they are passive victims. Having the names of people and groups to support directs individuals to whom they can follow and how they can support changing the reality of the left-hand side of the painting. This contributes to further mobilisation of these groups who are targeting policy makers to create structural change. |
