beth penhallurick essay title Deafness is not a disability: Explaining the disproportionate vulnerability of the deaf community to severe weather events through the distributive justice of communication mobility target audience ‘The Dialogue of the Deaf” seeks to give hearing climate activists and supporters an opportunity to experience what it is like for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals to be excluded from the climate debate. commentary For many Deafness is not a disability, as it has no direct effect on an individual's health. It is society’s discrimination which inhibits the abilities of the Deaf community and not their Deafness. Simply put, our society is designed and controlled by hearing people with little consideration for the needs of the Deaf community. In the face of huge societal problems such as climate change and subsequent increasing severe weather events, this discrimination can be felt more strongly.
