essay title 'Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset in which they were created’: The circular relationship of Anthropogenic climate change, socially constructed disasters and fossil fuel infrastructure target audience people who otherwise would not engage with issues of climate change and disasters commentary I looked at how fossil fuel contributes to anthropogenic climate change, how this then intensifies weather events and leads to socially constructed disasters which then damage moorings, such as fossil fuel infrastructure, ultimately impacting mobilities of material, such as fossil fuels, as well as people, such as workers who are evacuated. I argued that the relationship was circular between these entities and used the case of fossil fuel infrastructure, particularly oil and gas pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico, to explore the impact extreme weather events in the form of hurricanes. My idea was to make jewellery that is inspired by the climate emergency as well as fossil fuel infrastructure and the circular relationship. The jewellery could then come with information as to its inspiration and to inform people about the problem of climate change and things they can do in their daily lives to help reduce use of fossil fuels. |
"One of the two pieces I madethat represents a lot of the different elements is a choker. Its
quite a fitting piece with its name being a choker as a metaphor of the fossil fuel industry choking
the environment. It also shows the circular shape as well as having tried my best to get it to look like
an oil pipeline."
"The concept behind the earrings was for them to not only be circular, but I also wanted them to be funky and bright to attract attention and be a statement piece. So the idea was to have them look like oil spills and the rainbow that you can see in the oil. They took a few attempts but they came out quite cool in the end!"
